Title:Prom 68 Bach – Six Cello Suites
Musician: Yo Yo Ma
To start of with Yo Yo Ma was quietly elegant in his playing, using subtle bow movements that were, I first thought, underwhelming after the Piano concerto that were full of dramatic overtures. But slowly and surely it began to get more intense and interesting. Amazingly difficult changes were made so smoothly that they created unusual cello sounds. I was amazed that he played all six cello suites by memory. By the last suite I felt transformed by the beauty of the music and spell-bound by Yo Yo Ma’s magic. It took time to get used listening to just a cello, rather than a whole orchestra, perform but by the end we were converted.
